Pretty Vegas - new single from INXS

#

I watched the new video for Pretty Vegas by the new-look INXS featuring the winner of Rockstar:INXS JD Fortune. I can say that he does look much younger than the rest of the band. And since the video focuses a lot on him, it does not feel like INXS.

The music is quite unlike INXS. I can’t spot the exact difference, but there is something weird about the song. I like the song by itself, but as an ‘INXS’ song, I am not sure.

Anyway, it will be interesting how JD turns out this year for INXS, and more interestingly, what will the next Rockstar be like? One thing is for sure - Brooke Burke will be back ;-)

So much for being seeded 32 - Sania out

#

So much for her winning her first match. A disappointing end to Sania’s run at the Australian Open as a seed. She seems to have lost quite badly, especially looking at the scores.

Hmph. Good bye Sania. Looking forward to the French.

Sania Mirza wins her first round at Australian Open

#

Sania Mirza had a tough first set, but in the end won her first round match in straight sets.

This should not be a big deal because she is seeded 32, and she was the favorite. Good luck to her!

Offline sudoku is tough

#

Long long time ago, I had mentioned about Sudoku, and later I even managed to solve it online. Of course, after that I have managed to solve the medium and hard levels and I sometimes time myself on the easy just for kicks.

It has been a long time since I worked on it online. This morning I took it up in the airlines magazine. I must say, offline sudoku is tough. I had a pencil with an eraser and trust me, I erased a lot. Strangely, I erased more in the ‘easy’ grid. In fact I solved one easy, one medium and one hard. I could not solve (not in time at least) one easy grid!

Anyway, the fun thing about it is that by the time I take the flight on Friday evening, I would have forgotten the grids so I can potentially solve it all over again! I will at least try to get that ‘easy’ one out of the way. Till then, it is going to bug me that I could not solve the easy one.

Would you let a Marine go ahead?

#

As I was waiting for my flight from the Bay Area to San Diego in the Southwest ‘A’ line, I noticed that a young Marine walked up and went behind me in the line. Actually, there was one other person behind me and the Marine was behind that person.

When the boarding announcement was made and the line started moving, the gentleman behind me asked the Marine to go ahead of him, and then, the lady in front of me asked him to go ahead of her too!

Now, I understand that he is doing something brave and bold by enlisting himself in the Marines. I also understand that he is serving the country and it is a huge honor.

But I would not have let him go ahead just because he is a Marine. I let ladies go ahead of me if we were at the line at the same time. I would let elders go ahead of me regardless. I would let ladies take my seat if I was sitting and they were standing (not applicable to planes of course). I would let elders take my seat.

But armed forces? No. Why should I? I don’t think I am insulting them but I am just trying to make a point that they are honorable but not so much that you let them take your seat or take your place in lines.

Championship weekend NFL Picks

#

I went 3 of 4 in the Divisional Playoffs weekend.

That Denver win was convincing, but a huge surprise given the momentum New England was in, and of course, its track record in the playoffs. Oh well.

Now, for this weekend. Looks like Carolina may suffer because of their big loss in the running game.

I am going to go with:

Seattle over Carolina

Pittsburgh over Denver (Upset)

On another note: I would think any combination of Super Bowl matchups will make for an interesting game.

Opening partnership world record under threat

#

One of the longer running test batting records is now under threat. Vinoo Mankad’s and Pankay Roy’s opening partnership of 413 in 1955/56 is now under threat from none other than India’s Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid. At 403 for no loss, they are only 10 runs away from that record.

It is quite strange because Dravid is not an opener, and Sehwag was not one till he got settled into that spot. Even though Sehwag has stated that this is not a permanent arrangement (and rightly so), this match will raise certain questions about the batting order.

Why was Dravid the ‘sacrificial’ one? Why did he have to be the opener-interim and not anyone else like Lax, Yuvi, Sachin or Ganguly? Sachin and Ganguly especially because they have opened in one dayers.

Oh well. What this test has proved is that draws are still possible in test matches. What a flatbed pitch this one is. Stoopid.

Oh the best blonde joke

This is quite funny … check out the best blonde joke ever

Like it or not, USC is a dynasty

#

Like it or not USC is a dynasty. Good post by TrojanWire here.

Thunder and Lightning in the NFL

#

Reggie Bush followed Lendale White out of USC and into the NFL bypassing their senior season.

Good luck to both of them in whatever role they get in the NFL. I am sad that the USC backfield is truly completely empty now compared the last season and some serious doubts come to my mind about how we will perform next year.

But this is not the time to think about USC’s loss, but to think about NFL’s gain. All of a sudden you see a whole bunch of USC Trojans in the NFL performing well. Lofa Tatupu, Carson Palmer, Troy Polamalu, Keary Colbert, Willie McGinest, Brian Kelly, etc. were all in the playoffs.

I am sure Thunder and Lightning will cause many ripples in the NFL next year.

Again, Good Luck, guys!

Oh Fox pulled Reunion and the website has disappeared pretty quickly

#

Wow, I did not realize that the website was pulled off too! That was really quick. Why would they do that? Maybe their message boards were bombarded by fans of the show? If that was the case, dammit, keep the show!

I don’t want to see Skating with Celebrities. Show Reunion. Who murdered Sam? We won’t know. :-(

This LSU whining is never going to stop

#

Looks like the jealousy is not stopping. There are people trying to get USC to look bad because the media made it a 3-Pete story.

LSU fans, Texas fans, please stop it. It makes you look worse every day that passes with you trying to put USC down.

For your pleasure, I have this worthwhile link from Jan 5, 2004. Enjoy.

I am not going to be responding to any 1-peat or No-Pete nonsense anymore. Done for now.

On to 2006!

Update (1/13/2006): Right after I posted this, I see a this on Trojans Football News. Yes, stop this one-peat business.

A bad week for USC

#

Looks like it was a good week for USC. Here’s why:

1. Unless you have been living under a rock (or maybe outside California, which is the same thing ;-) ), you know that USC lost the National Championship defense at the Rose Bowl.

2. Carson Palmer made a fabulous throw on the second play for Cincinnati in their first post-season appearance since 1990 (?) and a second later what he felt was painful even on TV! The lineman fell on Palmer’s knee and the way it bent was just excruciating to watch on TV.

3. Troy Polamalu gave up a 15-yard penalty for unsporsmanlike conduct which made coach Cowher to talk about composure in the game.

4. Lendale White may declare himself available for the NFL draft! No Thunder, No Lightning.

Of course Willie McGinest had a wonderful night. So that makes up for some of the bad news.

But in general, not a good week for USC.

NFL Picks Divisional Playoffs

#

I went 4 of 4 last weekend.

This week’s picks:

Seattle beats Washington
Carolina beats Chicago

New England beats Denver
Pittsburgh beats Indianapolis (yes, upset special)

Decent comparison of Google and Yahoo services

#

Here is a pretty detailed comparison of Google and Yahoo’s services. Via desipundit.

I like Google Suggest which he gives a thumbs sideways. Also, I have still not used MyWeb 2.0 to the extent that I will love it. I don’t use social bookmarking the way the world seems to be using it.

And thanks to him, I will not be installing Google Pack even to try it out. I have Picasa2 already and am happy with that and the Google Toolbar.

Vince Young going to the NFL

#

I just saw the press conference tidbits, but bottomline is that Vince Young is leaving Texas one year early and going to go to the NFL.

I think it is a good move for him. His stock is quite high at this point and there are a few teams that can use him at QB. I don’t know if he will go ahead of Leinart, but he can easily go to the Titans.

If that happens, it will be weird. It will be the second year in a row that Norm Chow will have the USC’s opposing QB from the National Championship game, after Jason White from last year. Such is life.

But more importantly, USC may actually start at #2 next season. Especially given the blockbuster recruits they signed yesterday.

USC is still a better football team

#

I think I agree with Leinart. I think USC was the better football team. Vince Young made the key plays when it mattered, and USC did not.

But again, in the end, what matters is the score at 0:00 remaining. And it was Texas 41, USC 38.

Simple.

Note: I promise not to rant anymore about the Trojans loss (sounds weird to even type it - has been so long! :-) )

NFL Wildcard picks

#

Here are my picks for this weekend:

Redskins over Bucs
Patriots over Jaguars

Panthers over Giants
Steelers over Bengals

Time to delete all the Sportscenters that I had set for taping

#

I don’t want to read about how well Vince Young played, about how Mack Brown is a master, about how the Texas defense stepped up, about how the USC offense could not bring it this evening, all of it.

Need to be off the media for a week at least. And time to focus on other things.

Oh, the NFL playoffs!

Now that the streak is over

#

Time to focus on the next year. Who is it going to be - John David or Mark Sanchez?

What about the defense? How will it turn out to be?

USC is certainly not going to be #1 next season. The point is, how low will they start the season?

I am not going to fight it. I am not sure though, how this blog could be detected as a spam blog. What kind of activity determines that?

Oh well. For now, for every post I make, I have to enter a word for verification.

Vince Young was too good

#

Tip of the hat big time to Vince Young. Played like a true stud. Won the game single-handedly for Texas. How about that 4th and 5 scramble for the game-winning TD? Oh man. He is unbelievable.

I had seen a couple of his game before this one, but this was the best.

He should not come back to Texas and go for the NFL. His stock would have shot up big time after this game.

Oh no Reggie Bush, have you heard of momentum?

#

Reggie Bush should know how a momentum change can swing the game away or towards a team. His lateral caused a turnover which could easily have been a TD in one or two plays.

Instead that fumble put his confidence out, he had to take that egg off his face, and the Longhorns got the momentum swing they wanted.

Oh Reggie, why did you make that pass?

I have to give it to Vince Young

#

I think Texas is an ok team, but Vince Young carried them to the National Championship. He was just too good.

That’s not all I can say about the game, but that is surely my conclusion. More rants in other posts.
